Wroxall ‘B’ Play Well to No Avail

Wroxall ’B’s away match to Cowes ’B’ on Wednesday 14th February was not, considering the date, a particularly loving affair, with yet another disappointing result for the Wroxall side despite putting in a determined & skillful performance.

Wroxall had two stand ins, in the shape of the ever reliable Elaine Sharp for Callie Hatcher and the ever ready Colin Lovegrove for Harry Rann.

Wroxall fought hard right from the first set, with Simon Jilley & Elaine Sharp forcing a 21-15 result to Cowes in game one, and had a titanic edge of the seat match in game two to just lose out by an amazing  29-27! First blood was to Cowes at 1-0.

Set 2 saw Colin Lovegrove & Gill ‘Tiger’ Osborne trying to redress the balance, but struggled to find their rhythm or pace and could only manage a 21-9, 21-9 result to put Cowes further ahead at 2-0.

The 3rd set saw another tough battle with Trevor ‘Three Games’ Duffield (living up to his soubriquet) playing alongside Jenny Gardner. They took the first game 20-22, lost the second one 21-14 and had the score flipped on them in the third at 22-20.

Match score was now 3-0 to Cowes.

The 4th set had Elaine Sharp & & Gill Osborne on court next, for the first of the ladies matches. The first game was a close 21-19 result, whilst the second went all the way to 23-21.  Elaine & Gill matching their opponents point for point until the very end to leave Cowes needing just the one set for the match win, at 4-0.

Set 5 was a bit of a mixed bag, with Simon Jilley & Colin Lovegrove taking it to 21-17 in the first game, but lost their way a little in the second to finish it out 21-10. Match score was now 5-0 to give Cowes ‘B’ the match victory and Wroxall left hoping to get something out of this evening’s events.

The score line, at this point, didn’t really reflect the quality of play going on, Wroxall ‘B’ were playing well but just weren’t getting the ‘luck of the net’. Cowes ‘B’ were also playing well but getting Wroxall’s share of good fortune too.

This continued in the 6th set with Elaine Sharp & Jenny Gardner up next and determined to make a fight of it. They did a good job too, taking it to three games. They won the first one 17-21, but couldn’t quite maintain the impetus in games two & three, losing both 21-18. The match score was now 6-0 to Cowes.

Set 7, the second of the mens matches, had Simon Jilley & Trevor Duffield fairing no better than the previous Wroxall pairs. Despite not making it easy for their Cowes counterparts, they too, lost in straight games 21-14, 21-17 to bring the score line to 7-0 in Cowes favour.

The 8th set finally saw the much awaited good luck that Wroxall had been waiting for to finally appear; along with some talented play by Gill Osborne & Jenny Gardner. They not only won, but won well, in just two games, with a 17-21, 8-21 margin, to earn Wroxall a valuable set that might prove crucial to League positions at the end of the season.

Match score was now 7-1.

The 9th and final set returned to the previous form of the evening, with Colin Lovegrove & Trevor Duffield trying hard & playing well but not well enough. Colin & Trevor lost the first game with a commendable 21-15 result, but flagged in the second to lose out 21-9. The final result: 8-1 To Cowes ‘B’.

In spite of the final outcome, the match was a much tighter competition than would first appear and it was an entertaining and well played evening of badminton.

Congratulations to Cowes ‘B’ on a fine win and they currently stand 5th in Division 3, but plaudits also to Wroxall ‘B’, who by earning that one set tonight have helped to maintain their current 7th place in the League.

Many thanks must go to Elaine Sharp & Colin Lovegrove who did a great job, as usual, standing in for their unavailable colleagues.

If you are wondering who to go and cheer on next week, ‘A’ or ‘B’ team?, then wonder no more, as Monday 19th February sees the second of the ‘local derbies’ this time with Wroxall ‘B’ playing at home against Wroxall ‘A’! The venue is of course the Wroxall Community Centre and the time is the usual 7:00pm. So, no sitting on the fence, pick your side and cheer them on!
