Wroxall ‘B’ Still looking for Win

Wroxall ‘B’s home match against Newport ‘C’ on Monday 29th January left them still looking for their first League win despite putting in a determined effort and producing some fine badminton.

Harry Rann had stepped up to the ‘A’ team, for their away game against Vectis ‘B’ the same evening, so Colin Lovegrove stood in for him and Trevor Duffield had returned from injury to resume his place in the team.

Set 1 saw Simon Jilley & Callie Hatcher stepping up to the plate to kick off proceedings, which didn’t go well for the Wroxall pair. They lost the first game 19-21 and the second 11-21 to put Newport immediately ahead at 0-1.

The 2nd set had Trevor Duffield & Jenny Gardner on court to try and redress the balance, which they did successfully. Trevor & Jenny won in two straight games; 21-8, 21-14, to put the match score level at 1-1.

The match then swung back in Newport’s favour with Colin Lovegrove & Gill Osborne conceding in two games in Set 3 by a margin of 16-21 and a close fought 21-23 to put Newport ahead again at 1-2.

However Callie Hatcher & Gill ‘Tiger’ Osborne, playing in the fourth set, the first of the ladies sets, brought it back to level pegging by winning the next two games 21-19, 21-18; to put the score ‘even stevens’ at 2-2.

In the first of the men’s games in the 5th set Simon Jilley & Trevor Duffield went one better by putting Wroxall ahead for the first time. They also won in two games 21-19, 21-16, to take the match score to 3-2.

Unfortunately that impetus was not to be maintained in set 6, where Callie Hatcher & Jenny Gardner, despite putting up a great fight ,were unable to best the Newport side and lost 16-21, 16-21, to once again level the score at 3-3.

The 7th set had Simon Jilley & Colin Lovegrove up next, determined to get Wroxall back in front. But Newport did manage to keep their momentum going and Simon & Colin were unable to prevent a 17-21, 8-21 victory for Newport , putting them back ahead and with one set away from the match win at 3-4.

The 8th and penultimate set featured Gill Osborne & Jenny Gardner trying to redress the balance once again. They lost the first game 13-21, fought back hard in the second but could only manage a 20-22 result to hand Newport the set & match win at 3-5.

Set 9 was the only three game set of the match with Trevor Duffield & Colin Lovegrove out to finish the evening in a gritty and determined style.

They lost the first game with close 19-21 margin. Sensing that they had the beating of the Newport pairing, they threw everything at it in the second, in a tremendous battle that saw them emerge 25-23 victors. They calmly wrapped it up in the third with a slightly more relaxed 21-14 win to uphold Wroxall’s honour and earn them an extra set. The final score was 4-5 to Newport.

Congratulations to Newport ‘C’ on a well deserved first win of the season for them, but still maintain their position at the bottom of Division 3

Commiserations to Wroxall ‘B’, it was a very close match that could have gone either way, but luck wasn’t with them this evening. However, in spite of the final result, due to the number of sets won by Wroxall, they now lift themselves up one position to 7th in Division 3; so ‘Silver linings’ & all that withstanding, well done to them!

The next report up is the ‘A’ team’s away match to Vectis ‘B’, which had a very different result indeed!
