Wroxall ‘A’s New Year Opens with another Whitewash

The ‘A’ team’s New Year got off to a cracking start with yet another dominant performance against Newport ‘C’, when they played them at the Drill Hall, Newport on Thursday 11th January.

Clearly not suffering at all from the Christmas break, Wroxall continued in much the same manner as they had in the first half of the season and it was business as usual from the get go. Due to Roy Freeman being unavailable Harry Rann stepped up from the ‘B’ team in his stead.

The 1st set saw Carl Freeman & Linda Lucas get Wroxall off to a flying start with a determined and decisive, two game 8-21, and 10-21 win which was to set the tone for pretty much the rest of the match and give Wroxall a 0-1 head start in the match.

Set 2 had Clayton Simpson & Sarah Mcwilliam following along in Carl & Linda’s footsteps with another decisive two game set at 13-21 and 8-21 respectively. Match score now 0-2 to Wroxall.

The 3rd set featuring Harry Rann & Vanessa Allen saw a temporary dip in Wroxall’s performance possibly due to this first time pairing of Harry & Vanessa. The final result, however, was no different than the two previous sets; it just took a little longer to get there. Harry & Vanessa conceded the first game 21-18, but quickly found their rhythm and won the proceeding two games; 19-21, 17-21 to put Wroxall further ahead at 0-3.

Set 4, which was the first of the mens sets, saw a normal return to service, with Carl Freeman & Clayton Simpson dominating their Newport opponents and emerging     6-21, 8-21 victors and putting Wroxall within one set of Match victory at 0-4 to the visiting side.

The 5th set continued in much the same vein, with the ladies pairing of Linda Lucas & Sarah Mcwilliam also taking it to just the two games and winning confidently in an   8-21, 11-21 result and handing the match win to Wroxall ‘A’ once again at 0-5!

It must be said at this point that Newport, despite the run of the match were fighting hard and producing some good badminton, but just not getting the results they were hoping for. Set 6 was yet another demonstration of Wroxall’s current run of form, with Carl Freeman & Harry Rann also winning in two games with an extremely consistent 9-21, 9-21 score line, to bring the match score now to 0-6 to Wroxall.

The 7th set proved to be a much tighter one with Linda Lucas & Vanessa Allen on court next and still maintaining the impetus started at the opening set, by winning in straight games as well, although by a much closer 16-21, 17-21 result. Score is 0-7 in the match now to Wroxall.

Set 8 was the last of the mens games with Clayton Simpson & Harry Rann determined to carry on the good work all ready put in by the previous pairings, and they did not disappoint. This pair also emerged two game victors with yet another decisive 4-21, 12-21 set win to bring Wroxall’s current score to 0-8.

The 9th & last set of the evening had the last ladies pairing of Sarah Mcwilliam & Vanessa Allen capping off Wroxall’s so far unbeaten evening with a final two game win over the home team, scoring 14-21 in the first game and 19-21 in the second to give Wroxall ‘A’ yet another whitewash this season. Final Score 0-9.

Many commiserations to Newport ‘C’, who despite turning in a fine performance, were simply unable to stop the currently unstoppable Wroxall ’A’ side, and continue to languish at the bottom of Division 3 just behind Wroxall ‘B’.

Congratulations, once again to Wroxall ‘A’; who put in a determined & convincing performance to continue their unbeaten run and who have slipped to second in the League only due to having to cancel one of their scheduled matches and will no doubt be shortly back at the top of Division 3. Many thanks to Harry Rann for stepping up, so admirably, to the plate; in place of Roy Freeman to whom we wish a speedy recovery.

The next match will be a home match for the ‘B’ team at Wroxall Community Centre against Newport ‘B’ starting at the usual time of 7:00pm; followed on Tuesday by the ‘A’ team playing away against the Ventnorians at the Medina Leisure Centre in Newport, again at the usual time of 7:00pm. So come along and cheer them on!
